Lack of real world history: there's no introduction of new factions (like Romano-British in Barbarian Invasion, or the United States in Empire), nothing that ties your experience to real history. It's not fun or interesting, doesn't tie into the rest of the experience, and the civil war will occur no matter if you are a beloved king, or a despot the populace hates. Politics system: Rome II replaces the family tree and Senate features with a the following: basically you are the dominant family in either a republic or monarchy (as show by percentages), and nobles/senators are currency you can spend on promotions and things. Also, when besieging, your units will get stuck when trying to use ladders, really frustrating. If you fight a siege defense, you win every time. AI isn't able to use anything effectively, just charges the gate and throws flaming torches at the gates. Just turns into a clusterfuck of boats, and the way to win is basically gimmicky strategy (kiting around with your little boats while your artillery pounds the enemy). Naval battles are a new feature, but they aren't much fun. I think CA did a nice job integrating a number of things from past games into agent functions. There's a spy (can burn down buildings, poison armies, assassinate characters), champion (trains troops, can "raid" garrisons, improve public order), and dignitary (culture conversion, public order). Skills for Agents, Generals, and Armies: as you play through the game, your agents/generals level up along with your armies, and you can assign them skills. Each faction has their own set of historical missions to do, so it's not like the original where only Rome got specialized senate missions.

The AI makes smart maneuvers, allies with other countries, will offer you trade agreements and non-aggression pacts. Strategic/campaign map AI: this has been greatly improved with patches. It's easy to understand and feels a lot more useful than the original. There's also multiple forms of auto-resolve that can prevent you from suffering random defeats when clicking that button.ĭiplomacy: you can make long lasting alliances, and it is cool how the Greeks tend to form their own coalition when faced with outside threats.
